So ... this race did not go as I expected. It was much more difficult than I had anticipated and the wind and crazy hills did not help!! I cannot say that I pushed to my max, but I definitely did not take it easy. Sadly, my average pace ended up close to what I want my Boston pace to be. That definitely has me second guessing myself. STINK!

BUT ... even considering this I am happy that I ran the race. SO MUCH FUN to be around other runners and good friends!!! LOVED seeing everyone!!! Also a quick shout out to my SSF who appeared to get through the entire race without her asthma taking over. She looked AWESOME at the end!! WAHOO!!! To Rivertonpaul for cheering all the runners on on his home turf (even though he could not run it). And, of course, to Walter who won the whole thing outright!!! NICE!!!

Looking back there are definitely some Dos and Don'ts that I will want to incorporate in future races:

1. DO NOT go to Panda Express the night before a race right before they close (9:58 p.m.) and tell them just to give you what they have left (because the choices are sparse) and then inhale it while watching recordings of The Voice. Bad idea. :(

2. The following conditions DO NOT mean you should take it down a notch and start walking through the aid stations (periodically glancing backwards to make sure no other women are getting too close):  1.When there are not any women ahead of you that you think it would be possible to reel in during the last few miles OR 2. There are not any women behind you that you think are going to catch up. Bad idea. :(

3. DO have your kids run the last stretch with you if the race people are okay with it. My FAVORITE part by far!!! LOVED IT!!! Good idea. :)

4. DO eat a fortune cookie the night before a race. No one puts bad fortunes in fortune cookies! Last night mine read, "Good luck will come your way when you are not expecting it." Considering my race I definitely did not expect to place. Certainly the fortune cookie made all the difference. Good idea.  :)

ALSO: a quick thank you to those of you who stopped by our U of U PT booth. :) :) :)

Good race, good placement, now get ready for the Boston!!!

From Teena Marie on Sat, Mar 31, 2012 at 15:01:35 from 174.27.199.63

Slick~

I thought you said that I was ready! STINK! What do I still need to do????

From Jake K on Sat, Mar 31, 2012 at 15:08:29 from 67.177.21.60

Don't second guess - that's a tough course in perfect weather conditions, let alone a windy day like this! Its natural to feel a little "off" right now, you have a lot of training behind you and your body needs the taper to soak it in a bit. You don't want to run your best half-marathon 2 weeks before a marathon. You'll be fine in Boston - be confident in what you have done up to and including today.

From Kelli on Sat, Mar 31, 2012 at 15:10:53 from 71.219.85.126

YOU DID GREAT! It was less than an ideal day to run a race and Riverton 1/2 is one of the hardest races to choose from (this is why chicken me never races it!) It is crazy hard and the wind and heat just made it harder!

It is also difficult when you have no one around you, there is nowhere to find motivation to push ESPECIALLY when the conditions are less than stellar.

Love that your kids ran in with you, that is a good feeling!

Rest up and BOSTON is going to be GREAT. I need your number so i can get updates! I will be at work so I can not track online, but I will be carrying my phone no matter what. Honestly, I am considering taking that day off so I cant rack!!!

From Teena Marie on Sat, Mar 31, 2012 at 15:19:58 from 174.27.199.63

Jake~

Thank you SO much for your comment and advice. I often look at your stuff (both your blog and the articles) and am in awe of both you and Andrea. Okay, even though there is a big part of me that wants to second guess my Boston intentions I am going to consciously choose to go with your experience instead! Seriously, thank you. :)

Kel~

I wish so badly that you were going to be in Boston! Who is Ryan going to buy icecream for now? Okay, my bib number is 11611. I am pretty sure that it is a very lucky number. :) :) :) Also, thank you so much for the chats. They always seem to come when I need them the most. Thank you! :)

From Kelli on Sat, Mar 31, 2012 at 15:27:26 from 71.219.85.126

OH, I like what Jake says. ;o)

Um, Ryan can buy me ice cream in Utah. I will take it!

From Jake K on Sat, Mar 31, 2012 at 15:37:52 from 67.177.21.60

A young man by the name of Atsedu Tsegay ran the half-marathon in 58:47 this morning in Prague, #4 all-time. He is running the Paris marathon in 2 weeks. The immediate reaction on the web was "amazing race, but he has no chance in Paris now." Unfortunately, its probably true. Not even the best of the elites can bust out a fantastic half-marathon so close to their goal marathon. Most of the time its really hard to run much faster than marathon pace for 13.1 this close to the marathon. You have to have faith in what you have done and that it will "click" on race day. If you look at today as a really good workout that accomplished the goal of building you up even more towards the marathon (as opposed to breaking you down), then you'll be good to go... stick to the original goal - you can do it!

From Kelli on Sat, Mar 31, 2012 at 16:53:45 from 71.219.85.126

HOLY CRUD! Is that some kind of record? What is the fastest half ever run?

From Jake K on Sat, Mar 31, 2012 at 17:04:24 from 67.177.21.60

58:23 is the world record - that's 4:27 pace on a non-aided, loop course. Its almost ridiculous to even think about.

From timp on Sat, Mar 31, 2012 at 18:04:12 from 99.110.188.230

Teena - you've had a great buildup for Boston. Don't worry about today being less than expected. You will rock Boston.

From Teena Marie on Sat, Mar 31, 2012 at 18:13:27 from 174.27.199.63

Jake~

You have no idea how much your insight has helped me today. I no longer feel discouraged but hopeful that my body is doing what it has been training to do.

Tim~

Thanks!!! :)

From RAD on Sat, Mar 31, 2012 at 18:21:34 from 98.202.23.178

Excellent run this morning Teena!! I'm so amazed at how well you bust out these races! 1:55 was a perfect pace for me today :) Congrats on an awesome wagon wheel!!!

From Andy on Sat, Mar 31, 2012 at 18:42:48 from 174.52.172.236

Since I struggled holding marathon pace today I'm going to say that Riverton is a good predictor of Boston MP. You did very well today as is shown by your placing.

From Fritz on Sat, Mar 31, 2012 at 19:12:29 from 67.182.226.25

Despite the hills and conditions you still ran a great race. And you learned a lot, right? :) The fortune cookie idea is my favorite.

From prlman on Sat, Mar 31, 2012 at 19:18:50 from 208.54.4.143

Believe in the fortune cookie!! Awesome job today, it was much less than perfect conditions you ran it just right.

From Teena Marie on Sun, Apr 01, 2012 at 10:07:29 from 174.27.199.63

Rachel~

You are being too nice! So ... did you find out who your twin was?

Andy~

Who knows. BUT, no matter what ... WE are all going to have fun in Boston!!! :) :) :)

Fritz and Prlman~

I whole-heartedly agree. The fortune cookie (and its words of wisdom and vague prophecies) is certainly an untapped resource to runners that we may want to further explore. :)

From allie on Sun, Apr 01, 2012 at 10:46:14 from 97.126.222.108

way to go, teena! you did great today and you are definitely ready for boston.

i taped a fortune to the back of my bib for TOU 2010: the longer the journey, the greater the reward.

From Rachelle on Sun, Apr 01, 2012 at 11:51:49 from 66.7.127.115

I totally agree with what Jake & Kelli and everyone else said. It really is a tough course and the headwind was just nasty. I really think you are 100% capable of running the pace you ran yesterday or even faster at Boston.

You really should stick with me at Boston (7:45 pace) you are totally capable. And by the way it was so so fun to meet you in person. You are so cute and I am sorry I didn't get to talk to you longer. :)

From JulieC on Sun, Apr 01, 2012 at 16:45:47 from 67.41.188.67

Teena--- wise advice so all I have to add is-- no worries!! your number looks and feels lucky to me!! and glad you learned a valuable lesson of eating fast food late at night before a race. I think you will be pleasantly surprised as I forecast a tail wind in to the city!! GREAT JOB and glad you placed!! Those wheels were cool!!!

From Steve on Sun, Apr 01, 2012 at 17:17:27 from 66.87.64.173

Good race. Running a hilly and windy half two weeks before your marathon at MP? Sounds perfect. All I would add to any of the above is that you've done some hard training, don't forget that affect. I've run some slow races this year because of distance training I was doing. Your taper will bring some speed.

Don't skip it. Been there, done that. A few times. You will then be running your marathon on the same legs.

From Tom Slick on Sun, Apr 01, 2012 at 17:35:33 from 69.171.160.169

Teena - Get into your taper and don't do anything stupid that could cause an injury.....like running another race this close to Boston. Other than that I still think your ready to rock Boston. PPPPPP!!!!!!

From Teena Marie on Sun, Apr 01, 2012 at 20:19:09 from 174.27.199.63

Allie~

I may need to give that trick a try! :)

Rachelle~

Only if I am on roller-blades! :)

Julie~

Do whatever you need to (shrine, sacrifice, whatever) to bring your predicted forecast to pass! :)

Steve~

Question: How do I balance that? i.e., Fresh legs but without a fitness loss?

Slick~

Got it ... nothing stupid! :)

From Steve on Sun, Apr 01, 2012 at 22:01:12 from 66.87.64.173

Cut mileage, but add some fast workouts. The best person in the country to ask for a quick schedule for your two week taper would be Rob Murphy. Send him a note

Great job on the race. Rode my bike past you guys. Well the slower guys on my ride. Crazy course and it was sure windy for you guys. Way to get it done.

From glidergirl on Mon, Apr 02, 2012 at 11:11:09 from 71.219.131.24

AWESOME race!! 9th overall and 3rd in age group...so cool! :) :) Way to push through even though it was hard, you are awesome. I love your picture on FB that someone tagged you on. :)

From Rhett on Mon, Apr 02, 2012 at 11:27:30 from 74.41.249.102

Teena, congrats on the 3rd place finish! I'm sure that after a taper for Boston you will feel great and do very well.

From DaleG on Tue, Apr 03, 2012 at 01:27:03 from 152.216.3.5

Nicely done, Teena. I knew you'd do well. I've heard that is a tough curse and you ran it well even in strong winds.
