Started out super strong feeling AWESOME. Only thing that didn't feel perfect was my tummy. It wasn't sick ... it just didn't want to eat. The night before I had about 4 ounces of salmon and a sweet potato. Probably not the best carb-loading food but my appetite just wasn't there. Before the race started I was able to eat a banana, a couple bites of a zone bar and a few swigs of Gatorade. I was a tad bit worried that I wasn't fueling well ... but it was what it was ... my tummy just didn't want to take in food. Anyway ... long story short I ran one of  my best races to date up to roughly 18 miles when the energy just gave out. I forced down one Gu at mile 9ish and tried for another around mile 15 but it just wouldn't go. The gatorade at the aid stations was far to sweet but the water tasted good. :)

The wheels started to come off. It may have been due to lack of fuel (I did eat really well on Thursday and I was hydrated though), or possibly the XTERRA two weeks prior. However, I think the most likely cause was simply that I was not trained to run a 3:20. I just didn't have enough miles stringed together in my training. I had a lot of cross training miles, but mountain biking and swimming minutes just don't translate into running miles. (ALBEIT SO MUCH FUN!!!!)

I am very happy with a 3:23:50. It is a new PR (even though I feel my 3:26 time at Ogden was a much stronger race). Plus I have had a wonderful weekend with Ry, Annie and Nic!!! (Annie also got a personal best even though she has crazy sick and hacking up a lung.) It was also great to spend a tiny bit of time with Smooth and to have Rachel smack my buttocks as she zoomed by me someplace between mile 20 and 23 (the last 8 miles of the race are all a blur to me ... honestly). So many had AWESOME results today!! Congrats to you all! (I just watched a video of Fritz's and Amber's win ... EXTREMELY COOL!)

Happy Day! :)

From Bec on Sun, Oct 07, 2012 at 12:49:57 from 70.115.203.100

You are so cool Teena! Sounds like you had a nice PR, and an overall great race. I am sorry there were stomach issues going on. Stay strong!

From Rhett on Sun, Oct 07, 2012 at 12:55:35 from 184.10.181.215

Teena, congrats on the big PR! I'm telling you all that cross training made it happen. Great job!

From Rachelle on Sun, Oct 07, 2012 at 15:22:16 from 76.8.202.193

YAY!! Congrats on the PR Teena. I am so incredibly impressed that you even ran this right after your XTERRA and you PR'd to boot. Way to go!!

From DaleG on Sun, Oct 07, 2012 at 20:47:04 from 98.202.43.67

Holy cow, Teena!!! You are amazing!!! You keep getting better and better. We all looked for you And everyone else at the fires, But didn't see anyone. When I saw your time I kept thinking how by the time I was done, you had finished more than 3 hours before me. Lol. Pretty cool. Just curious, what were you doing 3 hours after you finished? Lol

Bec~

Thanks!!! It was weird ... usually I have zero problem eating before, during and after a race. My stomach just wasn't feeling good. I am super glad that it wasn't worse though. I kept thinking about all of the times people write about having to stop and use the POPs, etc. It never got that bad. I feel fortunate!! Sadly, it still doesn't want to eat much. Not sure what is going on. Not sick ... just a bit queasy. :) :) :)

Rhett~

I do believe that the cross-training helped keep me free from any major injury for sure. Plus ... it made my training so much more enjoyable. AND, of course, I got to do my first XTERRA (well, triathlon in general for that matter). But with that said ... I just didn't feel as strong during those end miles (like I have in the past). All in all ... I would take the XTERRA all over again this time around. :) :) :)

Rachelle~

It has definitely been an exciting month for me. Thanks for all of your spunk!!! I just love you! :)

Dale~

Annie and I never got to the fires. We got up to the start in just enough time to use the POPs and throw our clothes on the truck (actually the gun went off while we were throwing our clothes on the truck). :) :) :) Next year we will have to make better plans!!! :) (3 hours after I finished I was thinking to myself: "DANG, those marathoners who are still running are INCREDIBLY tough and have 100 times the grit than I do!!!!" :)

Tim~

I'll never complain about a PR. :) :) :) I'm starting to worry that they will be extremely difficult to come by anymore. I am getting older for sure!!!

From Britta on Mon, Oct 08, 2012 at 10:30:23 from 99.61.87.110

You looked so good/strong when you passed me. I don't remember what mile.. maybe 15? Anyway congrats on a PR!

From Britta on Mon, Oct 08, 2012 at 10:33:09 from 99.61.87.110

Where did you find the video of Amber crossing the finish line? I would love to see it.

From Andrea on Mon, Oct 08, 2012 at 10:45:38 from 72.37.171.52

Nice job Teena!! I do think you were/are in shape for the sub 3:20s, but it sounds like the fueling was the real struggle out there. It's hard to have the perfect race when you can't get in enough calories because of stomach problems! Still, a really great performance by you. Way to tough it out at the end - you are getting stronger and stronger. Congrats!!

Andrea~

Thanks!! The one good thing about not hitting that mark is that there is no need to decide on a new goal! :) I am actually really happy. Would I have loved to have been sub 3:20?? Of course!! But all considering I am pleased. :)

From Fritz on Mon, Oct 08, 2012 at 11:28:58 from 65.116.116.6

Great job Teena! A PR even with the fueling problem is a great accomplishment. 3:20 will fall next year for sure. I agree that someone royally messed up the Gatorade to water ratio at the aid station around mile 16. It must have been about 75% powder to 25% water. I won't complain though because now I am left with an extra GU that I can keep for another race :)

From glidergirl on Mon, Oct 08, 2012 at 12:58:59 from 71.219.155.251

Sorry you had tummy issues....you did so great despite it all! :) :)

Great job Teena. Lots of fun this summer doing all kinds of stuff... and still knocked out a nice marathon PR! Congrats! :-)

From Kelli on Mon, Oct 08, 2012 at 17:05:29 from 67.172.235.55

Salmon is not a carb for sure!!!

Great job on the PR! That is always nice even if you did not get exactly what you wanted.

From JulieC on Tue, Oct 09, 2012 at 16:39:01 from 207.108.177.183

PRs are NEVER overrated and you got yet another!! it is interesting how different marathons feel so different-- perhaps you are spring peaker so it felt better. late marathons are hard to wait for and stay ready for. sorry about the gi issues. Congrats Teena. Hope you are recovering well.

From Smooth on Tue, Oct 09, 2012 at 18:14:53 from 65.130.14.36

Wow, Teena, that was an impressive time for St. George, good on ya. Have you figured out why you werent able to hold down any nurishment before the race? Glad to see RAD keep up the flank slap thing, I miss passing you, or you passing me as it were, to keep the practice alive!!!!! Hey your getting pretty close to clobbering my best time at SGM ...again, congrats on a well executed SGM!!!

From Teena Marie on Thu, Oct 11, 2012 at 12:25:27 from 65.130.4.171

Fritz~

That Gu you were able to save should be auctioned off for the charity of your choice! :)

Brooke~

I definitely feel fortunate that it wasn't worse than it was. :)

Allie, Jake and Kelli~

Thanks! :)

Julie~

Hmmm ... very interesting thought. I like it! :)

SSF~

It really has been a fantastic year. I am one lucky lady! Love you! :)

Brent~

Thanks!!! Commando points gladly accepted! :)

Slick~

Rachel and I sure had the flanking thing going. I can't remember when I got her (probably around mile 6). What is your best SGM time? And trust you me ... there are plenty of races in our future for a nice 'ol smack on the glutes! :)

From AngieB on Thu, Oct 11, 2012 at 12:35:18 from 65.130.92.207

From jtshad on Thu, Oct 11, 2012 at 12:41:36 from 204.134.132.225

Congrats on the new PR and strong race despite the stomach issues. You ran great and would have crushed 3:20 if you could have fueled properly.

Congrats again!
