Decided to run this race a few days ago because, well, Snow Canyon is just a beautiful place to run and we needed to be in Richfield that afternoon anyway (so we were already close halfway there). :)

I did end up getting a 32 second PR (which is always nice) so that was a bonus and I got to hang out with Brooke (who ran an EXCELLENT race) for a bit -- I just love her! To top it all off, Sophia nailed her 5K! Ry ran with her. Sans watch Ry told her to just find a hard pace that she thought she could hold for 3.1 miles. It must have been the perfect advice because she ended up beating her previous best by EXACTLY one minute! I have never run the course but they said it was constant rolling hills that made it hard to ever get in a groove which is why they were surprised when they came in at 24:39 which gave her 1st in her division (by a lot) and 11th out of 167 women. Not too shabby for a petite little 10 year old! It also gave Ry 3rd place so they both got some pretty nice medals. (I was pretty jealous! :) :) :))

As for my race, it's hard to analyze. I haven't felt strong in a race since the Park City Half in August. Directly after that race I began to wean myself off of two of my three asthma meds (because I was upset that I didn't qualify for the best life insurance which they attributed to my asthma meds and my low BMI -- which may not be the best reason to wean myself off but it was the first time someone has told me that I was not healthy enough and that bothered me). By SGM I was on half the dose of those two medications and this race was my first race completely off of them. In other words, I still take my inhaler, but I do not take the Advair or Singular anymore. Not sure what to think because ever since I began weaning myself off I have had GI and energy issues, yet, I am still PRing (not hugely, but I am definitely not getting slower). Thoughts? With that said, my eating habits haven't been the greatest either though AND I may be starting too fast. Really, I just want to know what I should concentrate on to regain that "I feel strong" feeling when I race. :)

Splits: 6:59, 7:07, 6:59, 6:37, 6:26, 6:27, 6:51, 7:51 (ouch), 7:09, 7:33, 7:38, 7:39, 7:35, 6:14 pace/for .1

Hope everyone is enjoying November. :) :) :)

Oh yeah, one more thing: If you are trying to find a place in St. George last minute on a race weekend don't be surprised if the only place you can obtain defines free continental breakfast as a mini white powdered donut and a piece of white Sara Lee bread!! I couldn't stop laughing. I'm pretty sure that the health benefits of laughing outweigh the detriments of the powdered white donut so it was a GREAT start to the day!! Good times! :) :) :)

nice race and PR, teena! congrats to sophia as well. sounds like a fun day.

i think powdered donuts have a few carbs in them...ideal food for a runner, no?

Congrats all around to the Teena Marie family! :) I wish I had some intelligent advice about the meds and racing, but I don't. All I could say is that I started a med this summer and it took me 8+ weeks before the nausea/food aversion from the med wore off. So, maybe you body is still just adjusting to not having them? I don't know. I wish I had better advice. However, despite any of those issues (and only having a mini powdered donut for breakfast) you did a fantastic job!

Awesome race Teena and congrats on the new PR! It looks like you ran the race about right based on the elevation of the course. I am so incredibly sad I missed out on seeing you, I did not know you were there!

Huge congrats to Sophie on the 1 min PR. That is HUGE for a 5k. :)

Congrats to Sophia for the big PR. I can't believe she is only 10 and running 24 minute 5k's. I am still slightly offended you didn't say "hi". There is no way you could have missed me. I was the big fat guy in the flourescent yellow shirt holding a pacing sign. I kind of stood out in the crowd.
