The most exciting part of the day was the kids' track meet in Park City. My kids have never officially run track, they have just run around the block and throughout the neighborhood with me and done some running at their elementary school. Ryan was looking at the USATF website one day and noticed that there are track meets for kids that anyone can enter (after paying a minor due and entry fee). Our 3 youngest wanted to give it a go. So we went! We had no idea what to expect but it was AWESOME!!! I was worried that my kids were going to be a little intimidated because most runners were with a team: singlets, spikes, with a coach, etc. My kids (who mostly are basketball junkies) showed up in their basketball shorts, cotton tees, and regular nike general athletic type shoes. They all did great but Oliver really ended up killing it!!! After talking to a coach there we are considering having him workout with one of the teams three times a week and just seeing how he likes it. In a nutshell this is how it all went down:

Livvy: Had a great time (did not place in any of her events but had fun). :)

Sophia: Took first in the 1500 meters for her division (no other one in her division though). She ended up racing with the older kids (both boys and girls) and finished in the middle of the pack which in my book was AWESOME!!! She also got invited to join one of the teams for a relay event because they were a runner short. They ended up taking second. :)

Oliver: Entered three events (long jump, 100 meters, and 200 meters) and came home with three ribbons! His division had lots of runners and so he had plenty of competition. He had never done a long jump before so that was a surprise. The 100 meters he almost blew by stopping right at the finish line instead of running through. By the time the 200 meters came around he knew better. :)

** Note to self: These track meets are an ALL DAY affair!!! :) :) :)

Hope everyone had a Happy Mother's Day! :)

Wow, impressive for all of your kids. Sounds like a fun time.

Sounds like a lot of fun! I'm glad they do these meets for kids (although I want more adult open meets too!). They are definitely all day affairs :-) Its fun when the kids get to do all different events like that.

VERY PROUD of your kids! :) :) :) Didn't know they have open meets for little kids now!

I miss going to Alpine Day when my kids ran track! I wish I had gone to some of Eric's cross country races!

Take advantage of their growing years and enjoy their activities! They'll be grown and gone before you know it! :)

Dale~

It was definitely fun but it made for a long day! Next time we will take something for shade and a big stocked cooler! :)

Jake~

They did have spots for an "open/masters" division. A few guys showed up, they were pretty fun to watch. It was definitely geared towards the kids though. :)

SSF~

My very favorite part of life is watching my kids do the things that they love! Everyone always told me to enjoy life when they were babies/toddlers, etc. because the time would go by so quickly. AND ... I did enjoy those days, but I like these days even more!! FUN TIMES FOR SURE!!! I will cherish them while I can. :) :) :)

That sounds so fun! Glad you took advantage of the track meet. You guys planning to do participate in more of the USATF sponsored meets?

From Teena Marie on Mon, May 14, 2012 at 15:51:00 from 174.27.218.198

Andrea~

I think that is the plan. My 10 year old girl did the 1500 in 6:45 and I just looked up the times for the USATF State Championships and they didn't have a girl compete in that but the first, second and third place boys for her age group (Bantams) were 5:44, 6:36, and 6:44! With a little training and the right footwear I think she could do that! My 9 year old son ran the 100 meters in 15.62 (in regular nike shoes, basketball shorts and a cotton tee) and the state winning time for his division last year was 14.69 (second place was 16.26) and his 200 meter time was 33.71 and 1st, 2nd, and 3rd at State last year was 30.12, 32.89, and 34.29. So ... who knows. Thoughts?

Your kids have some talent!

I think the most important thing for kids running track is that they WANT to do it and it is fun for them. No pressure, ya know? As long as that's the case, then yeah - why not have them get in the top 3 in state!!

My hubby and I just had this conversation on the phone about an hour ago. One of the coaches suggested we bring Oliver and Sophia to train with him and his team 3 days a week. Our concern is that will be too much as they are so young. I think we are leaning towards not getting them a coach and just training with them on our own (after doing a bit of research) more on their terms and see how it goes for the next couple of years. They are still so young. Do you mind me asking how old you and Jake were when you started?

From Jake K on Mon, May 14, 2012 at 16:09:24 from 155.100.226.54

I didn't run track until my junior year of high school. 100% into basketball before that point. I ran XC to get in better shape for bball, and that was the end of my basketball days! :-)

Like Andrea said, you mainly want it to be fun at their ages. I think you know enough about running that you can train them on your own, and if they continue to show a lot of interest and really enjoy it, then maybe look into a more formal team atmosphere at some point.

From Andrea on Mon, May 14, 2012 at 16:35:02 from 72.37.171.52

I played basketball and softball until 7th grade, then joined the cross country team and never looked back :) There is something to be said for other sports when kids are younger, like hand-eye coordination, playing well with others, team environment, etc.

That being said, I know lots of people that started running track seriously when they were very young (6+) and did very well. Still love the sport today.

It's a tough choice!! I do think that you and your husband have lots of experience with running and could work with them that way. And if they seem really dedicated and want more, then add them to a more coaching environment.

From Teena Marie on Mon, May 14, 2012 at 17:33:10 from 174.27.218.198

Jake and Andrea~

All of my kids seem to enjoy running. With that said, 4 of the 5 have are madly in love with basketball! The great thing is they compliment each other very nicely right now. :)

Oliver has been watching youtube clips of Bolt (over and over and over) ever since the track meet on Saturday.

I think we will continue to take them all to the track meets and let them try whatever distances they want to. Like Jake said, if any of them develop a passion for running and crave something more than we are able to provide then we will look at a more structured running regimen (and a team and a coach).

I have to admit that it was REALLY fun watching them!! :) :) :) (In other words, I will have to check myself every now and then and make sure that it is THEIR passion driving this and not mine. :))

Thank you for your thoughts, they are very much appreciated. :)
