13 miles (AP 7:37) with Becky on the last half of the SGM course.

I have done practically no downhill running since Boston. It was evident today. Only a few miles into it and I started having gut issues. It wasn't horrible, but bad enough that it didn't feel good. I had Mexican food with Shelby at Coyote Charros the day before (as well as had downed a bunch of dark chocolate covered mangos that I bought from Costco). I was definitely feeling it all. BOO! Fortunately Becky's company helped me through and we found an outhouse type facility around the Snow Canyon area for a quick pit stop. Now today (Sunday) my calf muscles are letting me know that I absolutely need to get some downhill work in. A definite wake up call! (I have done occasional hill work but I'm always pushing hard up and jogging back down.)

So happy to have had Becky to push me. :-)

Morning:

6.5 miles: 4 by my lonesome (Big Bull Loop plus extension) and 2.5 with Smo (Sunrise Rustic Loop)

Evening:

2.5 miles with Shelbey on the Virgin River Trail. We went out at 7:30 p.m. and ran MP in 100 degrees (which felt significantly harder than MP). Lots of mosquitos by the river. I don't like mosquitos!!! Lemonade afterwards. :-)

19 miles

First 15 miles with Ry finding uncharted territory to explore, ha! Actually, we just ran up past Staheli's farms and found this uphill winding dirt road. We followed it until we could follow it no longer when it ended at some sort of cement factory on one side and a Desert Habitat Reserve on the other. Pretty fun, truthfully. Then back down to the Virgin River Trail -> Maverick -> Little Valley Sunrise Loop. Dropped off Ry and headed out for another one mile while he woke up Smo for me whom accompanied me for another 3 miles running our medium Sunrise Loop. Fun run!

Looking back, had I known that I was 1/2 mile away from 50 miles for the week I would have likely added that 1/2 mile on. Oh well! Another day! :-)

Btw, I love sticky mango rice! YUM!!!!

40 minute nice and easy run with Shelbey and Smo on the Red Hills trails. Absolutely beautiful. No one out this morning so we had the whole mountain to ourselves. We all had so much fun! Absolutely fantastic on so many levels! :-)

10 miles

- First 4 miles on my own, blah, but ran MP

- Next 4 miles with Ry (bits of Big Bull Loop and Sunrise Loop)

- Final 2 with Smo who gave me false hope of a nice comfortable pace for the 1st 1/2 mile, then turned it up a notch for a mile running me at HMP, then proceeded to go even faster ensuring my demise. Tried to keep up with her but fell short and watched her make it home about 200 meters ahead of me. :-)

20 miles in the blasted heat! Ha! Actually it wasn't too horrible since we got out early and we had great company!

Miles 1-4: Ry and I (Home -> Maverick on Mall Drive)

Miles 5-7: Ry, Courtney (one of the PTs that works with me, SGM will be his first marathon) and I (Maverick -> up Foremaster hill, great training for Veyo -> Shelbey's).

Miles 8-13: Ry, Courtney, Shelbey and I (Shelbey's -> Dixie HS -> Bluff -> back to Shelbey's)

Miles 14-16: Ry, Courtney and I (Shelbey's -> Dixie State -> Shelbey's)

Miles 17-20: (Shelbey's -> my house)

Hallelujah!

Side note: Courtney ran in a Spider Man shirt! Hilarious! He wears Spider Man socks at work. He got a lot of honks!

SCARY SCARY SCARY run! My heart was beating out of my chest!!!

Miles 1-2 with Smo: Small Sunrise Loop. Just enjoying my time with my girl!

Miles 3-6 by my lonesome. Sun was just coming up. I had just passed my turn around point a little past George Washington Charter School. Headed south on 3000 East towards home. Suddenly I see a coyote walk out of the foliage. We were less than 50 feet away from each other on the same side of the road. He (or she) sees me at about the same time I see him. We both stop dead in our tracks and don't move. I can see a truck coming up the road. I think to myself (in a matter of milliseconds) that if I didn't move that the noise of the truck would scare the coyote away. (Side note: at this time I didn't know it was a coyote. From the limited experience I have had with animals of the wild I assumed that it was a wolf, don't ask me why.) Unfortunately the truck stopped about 100 yards before approaching us. I saw a man just sitting in the driver's seat. I thought perhaps he saw the wolf/coyote and was contemplating what to do. When he didn't immediately get out I started very slowly waving my arms at him to indicate that I needed help. Neither the man nor the coyote moved. I took a deep breath and began to cross the street and then slowly proceeded towards the truck. The coyote did not move. In a matter of seconds (which seemed like forever) I arrived at the truck. The man states, "Were you being attacked by bees?" I said, "NO! There's a wolf right there!!!!!!" He stated, "I saw you swerving your arms all over and I thought you were being attacked by bees!" By this time I am safe behind the man's truck. The man then proceeds to tell me that it is a coyote and not a wolf. My heart was still beating far too fast but a sense of relief flooded over me. I proceeded to finish my run home. By the time I got to my door my fear of the coyote was transferred to anger at the man! My thoughts, "What??? He thought I was being attacked by bees and he just sat in his truck watching!!!" Seriously, what is that all about?

Anyway ... that was my run this morning!

6 fun miles with Ry.

Ran south on Little Valley road until we noticed some new trails that we had not run on before. Tried to look it up on a map. We think it may be some trail system in the Fort Pierce Wash but are not sure!

No coyotes!

morning:

6.5 miles inc. 7 x 800s. Unfortunately I did this on a treadmill because I was worried that it was going to be too dark on the HS track.

evening:

60 minutes mountain biking on one of the Bear Claw Poppy Trails with Ry and Shelbey. SO SO SO FUN!!!! Then 1.5 with the twins and Shelby when we got home. The twins each needed to run a mile as part of an assignment for school. Sherm wanted to shoot for a 7:30. However, after a 2 hour football practice there was absolutely no way. He gave great effort but fell far short. He is definitely a sprinter!!!! Livvy was just happy to finish. Shelbey started with Livvy and I started with Sherm. Once Sherm was finished I ran back to run the final quarter of mile with the girls.

Loved today! Even work was more enjoyable than usual. I LOVE LOVE LOVE having Shelbey as my PTA. She is wonderful!

4 hours and 15 minutes mountain biking in Brian Head!!! Crazy fun the first couple of hours and then kind of scary the remaining 2.25 hours. Ry and I got lost somewhere between the Lowland Pools/Dark Hollow area. We thought we heard moose but ended up be surrounded by about 30 black angus who wouldn't let us pass. As we tried to find a new route we got crazy lost. Ended up having to find our way to the highway and then ride 6 crazy uphill miles back to our car. We had run out of fluids, had no sunscreen on, and were plain ill-prepared. But at least I was with my love celebrating 19 years!! Shelbey was so great and insisted that she stay with our kiddos so that we could get a quick getaway. Spontaneous moments sometimes make the best memories!! Here's to Brain Head, Angus cows, and getting lost with my love! :-) Oh yea, and crazy heavy quads and bizarre sunburn lines the day after!!! :-)

5 fantastic miles on the Virgin River Trail with Shelby!! Crazy how Shelby and I spend 40+ hours together at work each week and then enjoy running and hanging out at the house in the wee morning hours and/or late in the evenings! I would have never guessed that my PTA would end up being one of my closest friends. I have had a hard time really connecting on a deep friendship level with anyone in SG until Shelby. Lots of people I consider friends here, but no one that I could really share my deepest thoughts, fears, etc. with without fear of judgement. This is likely because when I'm not at work I want to hang with Ry and the kiddos. I thought I'd become close with some fellow runners, but it just didn't happen as easily as I thought it would. Our whole family LOVES Shelby!! I feel crazy lucky to have her around! :-)

7 miles, including 7 x "almost home" hill with Smo keeping me honest!

First 4 hill repeats I kept up with Smo and found myself quite pleased with my performance foolishly believing that I must be in awesome shape because we were sprinting up and up side by side.

Little did I know she was playing with me!!!

Hill repeats 5 and 6 increasingly stole little pieces of my ego bit by bit.

When repeat number 7 presented itself I told myself that come h or high water I was going to stay with Smo. But h and high water came and although I desperately tried to keep up with that girl I fell further and further behind! She destroyed me. It wasn't even close. Seriously. It's the weirdest feeling to feel self defeat and yet so proud simultaneously. It was actually pretty amazing!! I LOVED IT SO MUCH!!!!!

5 wonderful miles with my Smo!

SO MUCH FUN this morning with Smo! We went exploring and found some new trails off of the Red Hills Trail system. The contrast of the red rock and dirt (on which we were running) above the super green golf course (which we were looking down at) was absolutely breath taking! Smo and I LOVED the combination of running on packed dirt, slick rock and boulder scrambling that we did. We really did have a lot of fun! :-)
