20 miles

Another big week for me. I am very happy with how my body is handling this higher mileage. The only thing that has bothered me is my tummy. Nothing too bad, but it just feels a bit sick quite often. Lame. I do think I will take a step-down week next week just to be safe.

We had a GREAT group this morning! I hope I don't forget anyone, but I am going to try and see if I can name all who were there: Me, Smooth, Kathie, Rachel, Lowell, Toby, Karen, Matt, Brooke, Tom Slick, Marty, Adriane, Kim, Kendi, Rick, Annie (my SIL) and Nic (my brother). :) :) :)

I ran the first 5.7 miles with Annie and Lowell. Annie is running her first marathon on the 16th (Salt Lake). There is something magical about the first! I loved being with her and listening to Lowell's hilarious stories. According to Lowell's watch we ran about a 10:15 pace.

My next 14.3 miles were with an AP of 8:21. I ran 5 by myself, then 3 with Matt, a couple more by myself, a tad with Brooke, a couple with Smooth and Rachel, and then a couple more by  myself. Changing running partners like that made the run extremely enjoyable.

Smooth had OJ, chocolate milk, yogurt and bananas for everyone at the end! I just love her!!!!! :) :) :)

Happy Saturday! :)

*** Okay, I have a question: I seriously have been eating way more than I usually do. I am hungry all of the time. Should I really have this drastic of a change with my appetite with 20 extra miles per week? Also, I am craving things that aren't looked upon as healthy: like salt. I have allowed myself to eat whatever I am craving, but that could come back to bite me. I am not concerned about weight (at least at this point), I am more concerned about how the foods I am craving are going to affect my running. I eat healthy most of the time, but also have allowed myself to eat big cookies and quite a few protein bars. That's another thing, are protein bars really healthy? I would love to have the time to eat the way I should all of the time, but I often eat what is convenient (and fruits and veggies just don't fill me up).

FANTASTIC week! I am so happy to see that you are doing SO well!!!! Maybe it just takes our body a while to get the idea that we aren't quitting so it may as well give in ;)

Nice way to end a great running week Teena. It amazes me that you are able to push yourself to such distances without even having a marathon coming up. You obviously love to run.

Dale~

Slick~

It'll be interesting to see how it goes. :)

Rhett~

It feels like Ogden is right around the corner!!! :)

Allie~

I am really curious to find out if this higher mileage will help me or not. I cannot figure out why I still have not been able to reach the speeds I was reaching 3 weeks before Boston last year (which was on much less mileage). I tried matching what I was doing, but was not getting the same results. Now I am trying this. Who knows how it will pan out. Only time will tell. :)

From Tom Slick on Sun, Apr 03, 2011 at 16:41:11 from 69.171.160.36

Hey TM, are you running Ogden?

From Teena Marie on Sun, Apr 03, 2011 at 18:44:04 from 67.2.71.182

Slick~

Yep, I am running Ogden. :)

From DaleG on Mon, Apr 04, 2011 at 00:27:23 from 67.2.13.157

I'd say with the extra mileage you are losing more salt and that's why you are craving it. Also, with all the extra working out, you will need the protein to keep your immune system up to where it should be. The salt thing was happening with Amy while she was training for Ogden and her immune system is probably shot because she wasn't eating nearly enough protein. As long as you're eating healthy most of the time, I'd say it's ok to eat a little junk now and then. I don't think you have anything to worry about.

Oh, by the way, I started Weight Watchers today. After seeing Amy lose 55 lbs so far, I'm a believer. Since she knows what she is doing, she is helping me. I got all my points today and I don't feel hungry at all.

From glidergirl on Mon, Apr 04, 2011 at 00:38:37 from 155.100.9.11

Do you like avocados, nuts and peanut butter? I bet you need more fat, too, and maybe that's why you're craving the junk food, too? Although I crave and eat that stuff even when I'm well-nourished and not running LOL. :)

The only thing I've found with protein bars that might be unhealthy is some of them have a lot of saturated fat because of the coating...which is so stupid because I think otherwise they would be perfectly healthy.

Have you ever tried protein drinks? That helps me when I'm overly hungry. Costco has a great 100% whey chocolate protein mix that is so yummy. I've never been a fan of protein drinks, but my friend had me try this one and it taste good and doesn't have a lot of crap in it (not a lot of sugar, etc) but yet it taste yummy.

And yes, I do think that an extra 20 miles would make a huge difference, especially 2 in a row. I think if you ever did 70 on a regular basis it would level out, but since it's just a new thing, you're body is probably STARVING!

Oh, and do you take a good multi-vitamin and fish oil and stuff like that? That might help as well.

From DaleG on Mon, Apr 04, 2011 at 00:44:09 from 67.2.13.157

Yes, glidergirl has it right, do the protein shakes, not the bars. I forgot to mention that. I like to make the chocolate shake and blend in a banana for extra flavor. Good stuff. I have a huge tub of the stuff, which is almost gone. I better go get more tomorrow.

From Smooth on Mon, Apr 04, 2011 at 00:48:40 from 67.2.74.200

SSF ~ Looks like Brooke got it all covered! You probably already know and do a lot of what she's suggested!

I am so glad that your body is handling the high mileage. It is wise though to have a step-down week.

From Kathie on Mon, Apr 04, 2011 at 09:00:59 from 97.126.209.130

Great Job! How long did you take to build up to 70 miles? I think I want to add more miles for my St. George training but not sure if I have time.

From Teena Marie on Mon, Apr 04, 2011 at 12:05:10 from 67.2.71.182

Dale, Brooke and SSF~

Great advice. I have been eating quite a bit of avocados, almonds, and pistachios. I also drink the whey protein from Costco (my favorite combination is one scoop protein, half water, half skim milk, 2 icecubes, and 1/2 tablespoon Pero :) ). I take a Flinstones chewable (because it has iron) but do not take fish oil. Maybe I should. The protein bars I eat are Zone Bars and Promax. Neither one has any trans fat, but do have quite a bit of palm kernal oil which I know is not great for me. They are just so much more convenient when I am at school.

Kathie~

I probably did not build up as slowly as I should have, but feel fine. I just started substituting a lot of my cross training for very slow easy miles. :)

From Scott Wesemann on Mon, Apr 04, 2011 at 18:30:16 from 66.239.250.209

Nice run! Smooth is awesome isn't she? :) Hey, I am the same way. The more I run the more I have to eat. I try not to overdo it, but most of the time I just give my body what it wants (in moderation). It always wants Dunford chocolate donuts and Cafe Rio. :)
