Not sure of my official time -- it never did show up on the computer.

Good character building stuff!!!! I think that is the best way to describe this race for me. Didn't do nearly as well as I thought I would have, but a great reality check! :) I have a list of what possibly went wrong, but they are just excuses. :) :) :)

I ran the race almost exactly as I planned through mile 20. Ran the tangents, felt strong. :) In fact, I distinctly remember virtually patting myself on the back at mile 20 telling myself how  incredibly awesome I was and that I had 3:27 in the bag and just might hit 3:25!!! OH HOW PRIDE PRECEDES THE FALL!!! Seriously within a couple of minutes of congratulating myself on my incredible fitness everything fell apart. I suddenly felt weak and exhausted. I decided to slow down a bit to re-energize but no matter what I did the feeling got worse and worse. At mile 23 I gave myself a good pep talk and was determined to reverse this trend. I knew if I could just gut it out for a few more miles that I could still hit 3:27. I gave it everything I had and ran that mile exactly at planned pace. After that the wheels completely came off. I lost a minute on mile 24, another on mile 25, another on mile 26 and then another with the course being long. I WAS SO MAD AND FRUSTRATED. I pointlessly tried to surge (my mind would attack but my body would not respond) as I watched 3 women pass me in the last mile. Very discouraging. Solid effort, just fell short.

BEST parts:

Hanging out with friends (esp. my SSF) before and after.

Feeling extremely cool to know so many elite runners and wishing them luck at the start! (I was worried about how Fritz would do after I saw the crazy huge deck burns on his leg ... but now I think he should pull a stunt like that before every race!!! WOW!!!!)

Meeting blogger friends that I had not met before :)

Slapping Slick's tooshie around mile 2

Running miles 3-15 with JohnnyV. Those were my favorite miles!!! Thanks, Johnny! :)

Having my son, Payton, waiting for me at the end! :) :) :)

My SIL (andrea27) had a HUGE half PR.

Misc. info for myself:

*don't get cocky

*3 gus might not be enough

*consider walking through aid stations to get more fluid

*re-evaluate training plan/schedule -- determine best plan for running while in PT school

*make nutrition and sleep more of a priority

*don't compare myself to others, just do my best and be okay with that :) :) :)

Teena, great job sticking with your plan and running your race. Some days you have it and some days you don't. I love your race report and the positive attitude it portrays. Get recovered and who knows, maybe UVM is the day everything comes together.

From Rob Murphy on Sun, May 22, 2011 at 11:21:54 from 12.198.106.131

Your post sounds like a lot of ours from yesterday. Not a bad day, but something wasn't quite right - except for Fritz of course!I was 90% sure I was going to DNF at around 15 miles.

True all that stuff you wrote at the end. You learn something from every marathon.

From Bonnie on Sun, May 22, 2011 at 11:30:16 from 150.135.115.182

Great race Teena, the marathon is a fickle beast. Sometimes it is all about sticking it out and just getting it done.

I hope you are really enjoying school!!

From Teena Marie on Sun, May 22, 2011 at 11:40:07 from 67.2.88.232

Rhett~

Thanks! :) :) :) Yes, UVM!!! It'll be here before we know it. Now ... I just need to figure out what to do to better my chances before then. :) :) :)

Rob~

Amen. There is so much that 26.2 can throw at us! Just when I think I have it figured out I am quickly reminded that I have NO STINKIN' IDEA!!!! :) :) :)

Bonnie~

YEP!!! SO SO SO TRUE!!!! Btw, thank you so much for your sweet message. I got it from my phone the morning of. The timing was perfect!!! :) :) :)

From RAD on Sun, May 22, 2011 at 12:14:34 from 98.202.17.113

What a crazy race! I'm sorry things didn't go quite as planned those last few miles, but I think you are good about looking at what you DID do and how amazing those first 20 felt and went. Conquering the marathon beast is a difficult thing. I always wonder if my body will ever get used to those miles and begin to understand and respond during them. Thanks for helping ME out so much this race! You are amazing.

From Andy on Sun, May 22, 2011 at 12:18:22 from 174.52.172.236

Your training was great and you executed your race plan perfectly. You should be proud of how hard you battled at the end. Your misc. notes to self are very good. Other than the cocky part. There is a difference between being cocky and confident.

From DaleG on Sun, May 22, 2011 at 14:20:18 from 184.224.150.202

Teena, Ogden is not an easy course and I think you did awesome. I have heard a lot of stories about the wheels coming off during the race, so you deserve a pat on the back. I'm proud of you for sticking through to the end and trying to turn bad thoughts into positive thoughts. I also don't think you are or were cocky. Cocky people don't doubt their ability, and leading up to the race you had doubts. I am bummed out that I didn't get to see any of you finish.

From Oreo on Sun, May 22, 2011 at 15:13:58 from 174.27.154.61

3:31 is no joke... great job out there.. Nice.

From Fritz on Sun, May 22, 2011 at 15:33:12 from 65.100.192.74

Way to tough it out Teena. When I hit tough spot in a race I just think back to the 5 or 10 races where I know I felt a lot worse. Without those tough races what could we rely on to push us through? :) Now you have a good one in your back pocket.

I think my deck burns really helped out. Just not sure how I could replicate them for every race without seriously injuring myself.

From Stacie on Sun, May 22, 2011 at 17:17:58 from 67.166.127.0

Wow. It's so good for me to read this. I felt the same way only I was 30+ minutes behind you. You did an amazing job! I hope to be able to pull off a 3:45 someday let alone a 3:31.

From Kam on Sun, May 22, 2011 at 17:40:13 from 174.23.120.174

I wish your entire race had gone as planned. Still, your performance is fantastic. I think you may be right...3 gus is not enough. You likely burned 3000 calories during the marathon, so replacing only 300 would leave you a little short at the end.

From jtshad on Sun, May 22, 2011 at 17:51:11 from 69.20.183.178

Congrats on a great time. Sorry about the last few miles, marathon's can be fickle like that. You did awesome and will use this to continue to improve.

From glidergirl on Sun, May 22, 2011 at 18:31:49 from 155.97.238.134

Teena, I'm so sorry things didn't keep working for you after mile 20. :( That is so sad. That said, you are a fighter and an amazing runner. Most people would have stopped and walked the rest of the way when they ran out of glucose like you did! LOL. GREAT RACE! :)

From glidergirl on Sun, May 22, 2011 at 18:41:20 from 155.97.238.134

PS - Teena, how are you feeling today due to the unfortunate depletion? I wish you the speediest of recoveries so that you can have a good 2nd week of PT school. :)

From watchmerun on Sun, May 22, 2011 at 19:00:08 from 24.10.152.45

Teena--you are doing amazing things: PT school, 5 kids, superlative runner. In the big picture, everything is up for you. A little bit better fueling would have probably made the difference for you. UVM here you come!

From Teena Marie on Sun, May 22, 2011 at 19:21:20 from 67.2.88.232

Rachel~

So glad we were able to all hook up! :) You did amazing! :)

Andy~

I am pretty certain that I need to pay you to run the last 10K of each goal race with me. Plans for UVM yet? ;)

Dale~

Thanks!!! How did Amy do?

Oreo~

That made me smile. Thanks! :)

Fritz~

YOU DID SO SO SO AWESOME!!!! :) Seriously, one of these days when you have some free time I would love to pick your brain. Seriously!!!

Stacie~

It was great to meet you in person ... albeit from about 50 meters! :) We need to get together for a run. :)

Kam~

I am definitely going to take more gels at UVM. I have actually been debating all morning whether to take 4 or 5. I'm little ... what do you think?

Jeff~

Sometimes I feel like I have no idea what I am doing. Is it better to run by feel? By plan? Train with a schedule? Train without a schedule? More miles, less intensity? Less miles, more intensity? All of these questions flooding my brain right now!!! YIKES!!! :)

Brooke~

I feel fine. Just a bit tired. I ate a lot yesterday. :) :) :) I am so glad that you decided to run. How do YOU feel? Have you posted yet? :)

Matt~

Yep, UVM is right around the corner! How is your achilles today? What did you decide to do? And thanks for boosting my deflated ego!!! I must admit, I have a WONDERFUL life! :) :) :)

From Annie on Sun, May 22, 2011 at 19:24:49 from 204.99.161.190

I know you said yesterday that you can't use the PT school as an excuse for being tired and a bit unprepared for this race but I do think that the demands and stress of it all definetly have taken there toll whether you want to admit or not! I mean you are super woman but sometimes even super woman gets tired!!! You still kicked some major butt on that marathon Teen! Beat your course PR by 8 minutes!!! You will beat your overall PR before you know it!

You are awesome so don't linger on this one for too long! PR or not it was a succesful day of marthoning!!!

I love you and thank you for always being an inspiration to me and my running aspirations!!!

From Teena Marie on Sun, May 22, 2011 at 19:27:21 from 67.2.88.232

Annie~

I love you, too, Sis!!! :) :) :)

And I LOVE that we are doing this running thing together!!! :) :) :)

From Annie on Sun, May 22, 2011 at 19:30:55 from 204.99.161.190

Well I wouldn't say 'together'! I'm really just following behind like a little puppy in your big shadow!!! But that's ok with me because you cast a pretty friggin sweet shadow!

When I grow up I'm going to be just like you! :)

From allie on Sun, May 22, 2011 at 19:35:50 from 174.23.197.101

way to go, teena! i think you did great and ran a very solid race. you just never know how those last few miles are going to go down, but you fought hard and it sounds like you learned a lot from this one.

From leslie peterson on Sun, May 22, 2011 at 20:09:15 from 71.195.193.128

You are amazing! I think you fast runners are funny to worry about a few little minutes!! My goodness girl, you are one fast little mama! Congrats!!!

From Steve on Sun, May 22, 2011 at 20:19:46 from 76.27.106.132

Great race! It was fun meeting you at the start. Personally, I don't know how anyone could do 5 Gu's in a week let alone in one marathon. I'll take gummy bears any day.

From Lily on Sun, May 22, 2011 at 23:14:35 from 67.199.178.210

I think that a 3:31 is supburb! Way to go. I don't know much about marathoning at all (remember I've just run the one), but I do know that even I started to feel like those last few miles were a death march. They are hard and anybody that says that aren't is full of it. Your time is so great and your fitness is obvious. No worries Teena girl. :) what is next for you in regards to racing? I know you're in school so it's going to be tricky. I can't wait to meet you sometime.

From Carina on Sun, May 22, 2011 at 23:23:56 from 204.15.86.83

We came in at about the same time!! Great race, It is funny how 3 minutes means a world of difference, when it comes down to it you ran a great race. You're race sounds a lot like my Ogden last year. I totally fell apart at mile 20 just when I thought I was going to do better than expected. You just never know if your body is going to hold together for you!

From Teena Marie on Mon, May 23, 2011 at 00:47:38 from 67.2.88.232

Annie~

You mean when you get old like me!!!! :) :) :)

I love you, Sis!

Allie~

Thanks for the kind words and the super sweet message you sent me. I looked for you at what I thought was the bottom of the canyon. How did I miss you? :( :( :( Anyway ... onward and upward!! I want to see if I can run UVM better but I am worried that three weeks is not enough recovery time to be ready again. Thoughts?

Leslie~

I know ... it is so silly sometimes. A year ago I would have been jumping up and down like a crazy happy woman!!!! Thanks for the reminder! :) :) :)

Steve~

Seriously? Is that what you take? I really really really want to know. I hate gus but they are so convenient. I actually dropped one of mine during the race and so had to choke down some raspberry gel they were handing out. But I LOVE gummy bears!!! Especially the red and white ones. :)

Lily~

I thought about you when I was trying to fight the demons. I tried to imagine myself eating a big snickers bar. Sadly, I don't think the virtual snickers has the same effect as the actual one! ;)

Carina~

You were probably one of those super cute girls that I saw running so effortlessly as I was desperately trying to inch my way to the finish line. :) I just looked at your blog. You are AMAZING!!!! Thank you for the encouraging words. :)

From Kathie on Mon, May 23, 2011 at 10:47:12 from 97.126.209.130

Loved seeing you at the finish!!! I know that you did the best you could on the day, you really need to be proud of that. Learn from this race and you will kill it at UVM!!!!!

From Tom Slick on Mon, May 23, 2011 at 11:28:54 from 168.179.157.7

Teena, you did great! Wish I could have been there to see you finish. When you went by Marcie and me at the start I thought you were going fast enough to win the thing outright!!!!! I'm surly glad this was just a tune up marathon for the Utah Valley Marathon for you. You're really going to kick butt there?

The Ogden can be a very brutal and deceptive run especially with all that severe down hill running, much worse than St. George. Just chalk the day up to a great days training and get ready to BQ at UVM.......Congrats on a 3:31:xx on a hot day at the "Ogden"....

From JohnnyV on Mon, May 23, 2011 at 12:34:30 from 204.124.13.151

3:31! You are awesome! Maybe I can stay strong and we can finish together at UVM. It was awesome to run with you because you are such an inspiration.

I know you are disappointed, but you have nothing to feel bad about. Your time was fantastic and you will do even better at UVM.

From Scott Wesemann on Mon, May 23, 2011 at 13:15:35 from 66.239.250.209

I know you feel like you didn't reach your full potential, but that is a fast time and you ran an amazing race. The best part is you got to hang out with your friends and have an amazing time. Way to push at the end.

From Huans32 on Mon, May 23, 2011 at 14:01:08 from 138.64.8.51

Awesome job Teena. You really did well on it and fought back some mean thoughts. And I love the list of things to improve on.

From Rob Murphy on Mon, May 23, 2011 at 14:21:14 from 205.127.70.66

Teena - If you remember, Steve took Peeps during the Salt Lake Half, not gummy bears.

From Smooth on Mon, May 23, 2011 at 15:05:15 from 67.2.125.206

EXCELLENT JOB!!! SSF!!! I don't know what else to say after all the cool bloggers friends said all the right cool things about you and your race! You are a remarkable girl! It's a privilege and honor to be counted as one of your friends (even though I am so NOT in their and your league)! You know so many people and admired by all! I LOVE YOU!!! Here's to a speedy recovery, great 2nd week of PT school and a terrific PR at UVM!!!

From fly on the Wall on Mon, May 23, 2011 at 17:21:30 from 204.113.19.47

I think I ran your race in '07. The end of Ogden can be a grind. But you know what? If you plug Ogden's 3:31:06 into Sasha's race calculator, it gives 3:20:57 for St. George! Time to start training for that sub 3:20! :)

I looked for you at the start and finish.... You must have been hiding.

From Teena Marie on Mon, May 23, 2011 at 19:46:34 from 67.2.101.26

Kathie~

Thanks!! YOU looked like you hadn't even broken a sweat!! I love the glow runners have after they run a race as well as you did! :) :) :)

Slick~

All marathons are learning experiences! :) Very cool that you and Marcie were able to run the whole thing together. :)

Johnny~

I am so so so glad that we were able to run the bulk of this marathon together. They were BY FAR my favorite miles. I think we should attack UVM together as well. What's our plan? :)

Scott~

Thanks. Running just would not be the same without the social aspect to it. At least not for me! :)

Mark~

I wish I would have seen you! How did things go for you? I need to head to your blog. :)

Rob~

Did he actually run with the peeps or were they just pre-race fuel??? What do you take during a race?

SSF~

That is because we are all trying to get in YOUR league! Btw, I did the age-graded results, and as usual, you kicked me trash!!! :) :) :) I love you, too! :)

Fly~

Okay ... I feel a little bit better knowing you at least looked for me! :) Kathie said you were there and I looked everywhere for your blue hawaiian shirt, but to no avail. :( :( :(

Sub 3:20!!! Ummm ... I think I will concentrate on the 3:26:59 first!!! :) :) :)

From Kim on Wed, May 25, 2011 at 11:25:57 from 67.199.180.90

Wow Teena! I think you did great! Sorry it wasn't quite what you wanted but I think you put forth a super effort and did a great job! Plus you learned a few things along the way! Thanks for sharing the race with us! It gets me excited for SGM!

I enjoyed your report... Your fall wasn't very far, as long as you learned your lesson, I'd consider this one a blessing.

From MarcE on Thu, May 26, 2011 at 23:02:09 from 204.16.82.120

I think you did great! You were only 4 minutes off your goal, and a lot faster than most..you probably placed in your AG!Soon enough you'll be one of those elites you're glad to know...and I'm glad to know you! Congrats!
